Yet another community to join, Google+ vExpert Community Page

So with the recent re-design of Google+ I’ve been drawn back into the platform as now I think it has a little more viability as a community organizational group as well as a Social Media platform that I can use for what I would consider “Work Related”. I tend to separate Facebook for friends/family and G+ for work and technical community. From my interactions with others this is common as well.

Today I created the vExperts G+ Community page. If you would like to join simply click on the link and ask to be a member. vExperts from any of the previous years will be welcome so it won’t be specific to a set year. Also with the impending announcement of the 2013 vExpert designations I thought it would be good to get the page up and running prior to the announcement.

vExpert Weekly Digest – May 6th 2013

vexpertmay6This week brings us EMC World and the plethora of related posts that go with it. New updates around VXLAN, ESXi 5.1 U1 and the changes that come with it. Lots of great content from last week so make sure you check it out.  As always, feedback is welcome. Still waiting for Flipboard support to respond to my suggestions (they are SLOOOOOW) so I’ll keep my fingers crossed on that front.

Side note, if you are in the Seattle area and will be attending the Seattle VMware User Conference, come by and say hi. I will be at the SimpliVity booth doing live demos, and will have a break out session about Hyper-Convergence.

Kermit the Frog Gives a Semi-Technical Presentation

58390_527474307303656_60596929_nOtherwise known as #EngineersUnplugged. There is nothing more humbling than seeing yourself on video dissemble about technology with a whiteboard in the hallway of a hotel after a near week long fun-fest of technology discussions, and long nights schmoozing with your peers.

That said, the wonderful Dave Henry was kind enough to join forces with me at VMware PEX to do an episode of Amy Lewis’s Engineers Unplugged Video Podcast.

You are always your own worst critic, so yes I sound like Kermit the Frog, and Yes, apparently I’ve been unable to fight off the freshmen 15 this year and I’ve developed a second chin.

That said, it was a great experience, and Amy has been a truly great friend and peer. When it comes to the Social Media, community outreach, and a pure love of Bacon, there is no other person on this planet who has dialed it in as well as she has. Do yourself a favor and go watch all the episodes. There are some really great technology discussions are taking place.

vExperts Weekly Digest April 21st 2013

This week: SimpliVity gets covered by WahlNetwork, Oversized VMs, Upcoming VMUGs, Orchestrator Workflows, vCloud Director on RHEL and lots, lots more vExpert Awesomeness.

4-21-2013 9-09-08 AM

Side note regarding the format of the Flipboard Magazine, I have had a few emails with Flipboard support about the ability to do a simple subscription that would encompass all of the vExpert Weekly Digests into a single Magazine format that was episodic, essentially giving a one link subscription, and the choice to pick episodes. Still waiting to hear back if that functionality will be added. It really would be nice.

Shameless Plug: VMware Online Forum – Come Chat With Me

arrows I’m not sure if I made it clear enough as to when my session was going to take place. That said, I’ll be talking about Datacenter Convergence Trends and where that market is moving, why you might want to look at a fully converged virtualization platform, and why it makes sense to do so.  Now if you have a spare half hour and want to heckle me in an online format, register here and dedicate 30 minutes of your time. Apparently there are other sessions too, but mine is probably the most important one /sarcasm. In all honesty there are a ton of online sessions, lots of vExpert chats, and tons of presentations that will be given over the day long perio.

Actually its cool that VMware does these online forum events because there are a lot of people who can’t go to VMworld, PEX, VMUG events, or event the VForums that travel around. So online events like this are helpful.

Online VMware Forum 2013
Unleash the Power of Virtualization to Simplify IT
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
8 a.m. – 1 p.m. PT / 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET

One more thing, to find the online chats you need to go to the main page, and click on the area that says “Networking Lounge” on the right hand side. Then you will be presented with a set of choices. The one you will want to pick for vExpert Chats is titled “VMware vExpert and Industry Chats”

vExperts Weekly Digest – April 14th 2013

vExperts-4-14-2013Episode 3 with the vExperts Weekly Digest is up for your review. Lots of good stuff this week with the release of the VMware Horizon-Mirage Reference Architecture, vBeers following the Las Vegas VMUG, and some good stuff coming out of the VMware Communities Roundtable around the various Flings out there.

I’m continuing to work with this weekly format until Flipboard gets back to me on how to make this a multi-edition publication. Feedback is very much welcome.

vExperts Weekly Digest – April 7th 2013

vExperts-Apr7Just published, the second episode of the vExperts Weekly Digest. What I’m finding is that with the Flipboard magazine creation process is that you can’t simply produce a single magazine with multiple editions. Each one is currently a separate magazine itself. To me this is problematic and annoying primarily because you can’t simply subscribe to a magazine and then get updated with each new edition. The alternative is to remove all the previous flipped content and then create a new magazine with new articles. I think for a weekly digest that will be too much, not to mention, there will be no way to go back and view the previous weeks version.

I’ve got a few emails out to the flipboard team to see if this functionality is going to be added or if its something I’m simply not seeing. The one problem with not having a web based content creation panel is that the ability to edit and post produce sucks. So this project continues to be a work in progress and I’m still working out the kinks. Regardless, I’m happy to report that the first edition had 29 subscribers and 669 flips for the content within.
